Comox Valley Division of Family Practice

Courtenay Medical Associates

Seeking a family physician to take over an exceptionally well-organized panel of 950 patients. My panel is small enough to allow time away from the practice during the week (I currently see my FP patients seven sessions per week) so that the successful applicant may ski, hike, bike, golf, scuba-dive, or kayak during the week, not just at weekends. Alternatively, the panel could be grown to suit a physician who wants to work more: there are plenty of unattached patients in the Valley since the population keeps growing as news of our lifestyle and benign climate gets out.

I am a member of Courtenay Medical Associates. We are a cost-sharing group of six FPs. Over the years five of us have joined from the UK and we all value the clinical and working practice independence that Canada offers compared with Britain’s NHS. We are a very collegial and democratic bunch. There are plenty of out-of-office professional interests within our group including medical leadership (one of us will be president of Doctors of BC in 2026); GP oncology; Emergency Room; Hospital In-Patient and Long Term Care (there being no requirement for FPs to do this work - most do not); medical education (three of us are preceptors in the UBC Strathcona Residency program and one leads it); and Medical Assistance in Dying. Three of us are members of a CME group of 11 local FPs who meet monthly (under the Foundation for Medical Practice Education).

We have a long-established cross-cover system that means that periods of leave can be booked well in advance and the need to be away from the practice at short notice is also easily dealt with.  No locum?  No problem.

We have a great team including a business manager, and hard-working clerical staff and MOAs. We are part of the Valley’s Primary Care Network and have a social worker and a Mental Health and Substance Use worker joining us in April 2025. A dermatologist works alongside us and a private podiatrist also works out of our office a couple of times each week.

Community Information:
Situated on the east coast of Vancouver Island the Comox Valley is comprised of the City of Courtenay, the Town of Comox, the Village of Cumberland and the idyllic rural areas from Fanny Bay in the south to Black Creek in the north, and includes the islands of Hornby and Denman. The Comox Valley is one of the Island’s best-kept secrets!

Surrounded by majestic mountains, rushing rivers, lush rainforests and shimmering seas, this region is highly attractive to those seeking variety and a superb quality of life, as well as affordable housing.  A great place to raise a family, we have a strong sense of community and a shared spirit of cooperation.  We are one of the fastest growing areas in Canada and educational facilities range from elementary to full degree programs at the North Island College.

The valley enjoys short mild winters and warm dry summers.  The Comox Valley is also host to over 50 annual festivals, and the local Sid Williams Theatre provides year-round performing arts.  For great boutique shopping, go to 5th Street in Courtenay and visit the local restaurants, farmers market and vineyards for the renowned local food scene.

If you enjoy the outdoors, Mount Washington Ski resort, which has 1700 acres of terrain, is only 30 minutes outside the city.  World-renowned mountain biking trails that can be ridden year round are located in Cumberland.  Furthermore, the beautiful west coast community of Tofino is only 2.5 hours away.  A typical weekend in the region can include superb salmon fishing, paddle boarding at Goose Spit or on Comox Lake, a tube float down the Puntledge River, or time spent on a patio at one of the three local micro-breweries.

The physician community is welcoming and collegial with 15 full-service medical clinics, two walk-in clinics and a military base clinic.  We are currently served by the Island Health run Comox Valley Hospital, a newer 153-bed acute care facility.
