... I'M PREGNANT AND NEED A MATERNITY CARE PROVIDERIn British Columbia, women have options available for who cares for them during their pregnancy. The BC Medical Service Plan (BC MSP) will cover the cost of your maternity care. In the Comox Valley, you can choose a family physician or a registered midwife as your maternity care provider. In some circumstances you may be referred to an obstetrician for your primary care (see note below). NOTE: Obstetricians in the Comox Valley provide 24 hour maternity and gynaecological care at Comox Valley Hospital. An obstetrician is a specialist in women’s health and has expertise in the management of obstetrical emergencies and high risk pregnancies. Consultation with an obstetrician is available for pregnancies requiring additional medical expertise, by referral from your maternity care provider. Obstetricians work in collaboration with family physicians and midwives and strive to provide non-biased, patient centred care and may follow patients in and out of hospital as long as ongoing care is needed. Obstetricians also provide counselling and assistance with postpartum birth control, sexual health, and incontinence. |
