Denman Medical Clinic - Denman Island

Ever dreamed of practicing family medicine on a gulf island on the West Coast of BC? Well, here’s your opportunity! Denman Island Clinic provides full family practice for a broad demographic of about 1400 permanent residents which swells to about 1800 in Summer. The clinic is located at a 10-minute walk and 10-minute ferry ride to Vancouver Island. 

The position is for up to 1.0 FTE primary care provider, which could be a Family Physician or Nurse Practitioner, to join an existing Full Time Physician.

The practitioner will evaluate, diagnose, treat, and provide ongoing care management to patients, with a wide variety of illnesses, diseases, injuries, and functional disorders, commensurate with the professional services provided by a full scope General Practitioner.  The practitioner will provide the Services via face to face appointments, telephone consultations and virtual care options where available and as appropriate based on the clinical circumstances.

The full scope of primary health care services including but not limited to the following:

(i) Health promotion and illness prevention services;

(ii) Primary care for minor or episodic illnesses;

(iii) Management of chronic diseases

(iv) Management and co-ordination of patient care across the spectrum of primary, secondary and tertiary care (i.e. referral to specialists and other providers, case management, case conferences and acting upon consultative advice);

(v) Primary reproductive care;

(vi) Primary mental health and substance use (MHSU) services;

(vii) Support for Substance use;

(viii) Gender-affirming care;

(ix) Support for the terminally ill;

(x) Coordination and access to rehabilitation;

(xi) Provide medical coordination and participate in multidisciplinary team planning for the ongoing health needs of patients.

(xii) Clinical administrative services

Benefits: May be eligible for additional remuneration in accordance with the Rural Subsidiary Agreement and the clinic is part of the BC Rural Locum Program.

Recruitment Incentive:  up to a maximum of $10,000 (based on 1.0 FTE)

Relocation: may be eligible up to a maximum of $15,000 (amount based on funding availability and on location relocating from)

Flat fee: $14,500

Fee Premium: 9.56%

CME: $2,200/annum year 3-4 and $4,400/annum after 4 years in the community

EMR: TeleHealth and Telus Med Access EMR is available via secure high-speed internet. Denman Island has a highly competent paramedic team and 24/7 ambulance service.  

As a Primary Care Network clinic, allied health providers are available including a social worker, a pharmacist, a physiotherapist, a mental health and a substance use clinician, a dietician, and a Health Authority medical lab nurse.

The Health Centre building is owned and managed by a non-profit society. It houses a modern, well-equipped family practice clinic and a home care and counseling organization.

Denman Island is just South of Courtenay in the Comox Valley. It has endless opportunities for outdoor recreation and hosts festivals, music concerts, plays, etc. year-round. There is a general store, post office, hardware store, craft store, bookstore/coffee shop, and a bistro. There are two community halls, one providing entertainment and meeting space, the other a fitness center and gym. Elementary education is provided at the Denman Community School (School District 71) and preschool is provided by the new state-of-the-art Blackberry Lane Children's Centre.
