Shared Care Project: Adult Mental Health and Substance Use
Project Completion Date: December 31, 2022
Project Contact: April Bonise
The Adult Mental Health and Substance Use (AMHSU) Shared Care Project aimed to increase Family Physician (FP) knowledge of Mental Health best practices, increase FP and MOA awareness of specialized services, and troubleshoot existing communication gaps between FPs, Specialists (SPs), MOAs and specialized services.
Five gaps were identified among Family Physicians in the community:
- Knowledge of MHSU best practices
- Skills to screen for MHSU concerns
- Awareness of MHSU resources
- Confidence and support
- Volume of MHSU patients
In order to address these gaps, the project working group organized three CME sessions focusing on three areas of adult mental health that Family Physicians commonly see in their practices: sleep disorders, mental health medication management during pregnancy, and management of OCD.
These CMEs were very well received by Family Physicians, and attendees reported greater knowledge and confidence in treating patients with these concerns and accessing the services and support they need to do so.
