Registered Midwife
Midwives provide comprehensive maternity care as primary healthcare providers, throughout pregnancy, labour and delivery, and the postpartum period.
The Provincial Medical Services Plan (BC Care Card) fully funds midwifery care provided by a Registered Midwife in BC. You do not need a referral from a physician. During our initial visit, you will have an opportunity to ask questions and determine if midwifery care is the right choice for you. Registered midwives are specialists in normal, healthy pregnancies. Certain medical conditions may require a higher level of care. We will thoroughly review your medical history and physical examination to ensure that you have no pre-existing medical conditions that might make you ineligible for midwifery care. If you or your baby develops a medical problem outside the midwifery scope of practice while in our care, we will arrange for you or your baby to be seen by a physician specialist (usually an obstetrician or paediatrician).
There are currently two models of midwifery care in Kamloops:
Sage Hills Community Midwives
Spots are limited in Kamloops and women are encouraged to apply early in pregnancy.
If you are placed on the midwifery care waitlist it is important to seek prenatal care from another provider in the meantime.

You will be assigned to a primary midwife, or a team of two midwives, whom you will see for most of your prenatal and postpartum care and who will most likely attend your labour & birth. Your midwife will follow you and your newborn for 6-8 weeks postpartum, at which point you will be discharged back into the care of your primary care provider.
If you wish to access midwifery care through Mighty Oak Midwifery, you must fill out the New Client Application Form through the Mighty Oak Midwifery website (link below).

Registered midwives Jessica Astle, Natalie Avery and Lee Janzen will be opening the doors to a new midwifery clinic on September 1, 2019. These midwives operate under a shared care model with a rotating call schedule. You will have the opportunity to meet all three midwives over the course of your prenatal care, with one midwife from our practice on-call and available for your labour and birth. We will continue to offer clients highly personalized prenatal care, choice of birthplace, and provide home visits in the early postpartum period.
We are currently accepting intakes for expected due dates in February 2020 and onwards. Prospective clients are welcome to self-refer.

We will also be accepting faxed referrals for clients appropriate to midwifery care directly from our obstetric colleagues and family physicians in the community.
