Shared Care Project: Optimizing Neurology Access in SND

In the summer of 2024, an SND Division Shared Care working group began work on an Expression of Interest (EOI) project to identify the current gaps in neurology care in our community and review/update work done several years ago by a previous neurology working group. 

Following a gap analysis, needs assessment, provider survey and data requests, the group identified several key challenges contributing to lengthy wait times for the JPOCSC Neurology Clinic:

  • A large volume of inappropriate referrals
  • A scarcity of neurology specialists practicing in SND
  • Lack of guidance for FPs about what is considered an appropriate referral
  • Pressure from patients seeking specialist neurology referrals for their concerns

With the EOI complete, the From Referral to Resolution: Optimizing Neurology Access in Surrey-North Delta project will aim to address these issues by helping Family Physicians understand the referral criteria, providing clinical learning opportunities for FPs, and promoting relevant resources, with the aim of improving referral processes for the Neurology Clinic and decreasing patient wait time to initial consult.
