“LIVES DEPEND ON YOUR ACTIONS NOW”: FAMILY DOCTORS URGE PEOPLE TO STAY HOME IN OPEN LETTER

112 Surrey and North Delta family doctors have signed the letter, which asks for the public’s help to fight the spread of COVID-19

Surrey, British Columbia

In a movement that is gaining momentum across the province, 112 family doctors in Surrey and North Delta have signed an open letter urging the public to follow Dr. Bonnie Henry’s directive to stay home unless absolutely necessary.

“Doctors cannot do this alone,” the letter states. “What the public does now will impact the health of British Columbians the weeks and months ahead.”

The letter urges residents to follow Dr. Henry’s directive, which includes:

  • Staying home unless absolutely necessary
  • Keeping 2 metres or 6 feet away from everyone if you must go out
  • Washing your hands frequently.
  • Telling your loved ones to do the same.

The message is for everyone but is particularly aimed at young people who might not be taking things as seriously as they should. “We sometimes see you out in the park or at the beach.,” the letter states. “You can get sick from this virus. You can also be carriers and cause a lot of harm to parents, grandparents, and other loved ones.”

The letter is one of a growing number of appeals from health care providers in recent days to stay home. With 66 new cases identified today, BC currently has 725 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The province declared a state of emergency on March 18.

THE LETTER CAN BE VIEWED HERE.
