Communications Officer – Full-Time, 12-Month Fixed Term

 

Job Summary 
The position is a full-time opportunity to join the Burnaby Division of Family Practice (BDFP) in the capacity of Communications Officer. Reporting to the Communications Manager, Primary Care Networks (PCN), this opportunity is ideal for a community-minded communicator interested in working in a non-profit environment within health care. This opportunity is for a fixed term, lasting 12 months from the start date, with the potential to become permanent.  
Working across BDFP portfolios, the Communications Officer’s purview will include a combination of provider- and patient-facing communications. They create and implement strategic communications plans for physician engagement and member communications, promoting BDFP networks, initiatives, and events, supporting PCN communications where needed. Key initiatives to support will include optimizing Patient Medical Homes, the Long Term Care Initiative, pregnancy care, patient attachment, Shared Care projects, and physician and MOA networks.  
 
Job Description

Key Responsibilities
The Communications Officer will work with BDFP team members, primary care providers, and partners as necessary to develop and implement communications plans related to a variety of communications and engagement needs. 
Regular responsibilities include multimedia content creation to support BDFP initiatives and events, and publishing to public- and member-facing communications channels, such as the BDFP and PCN website properties, social media, and e-newsletters. The Communications Officer will also contribute to the creation of communications and marketing assets for print and digital marketing and reporting to stakeholders.
Regular tasks include but are not limited to:
  • Develop and implement BDFP brand strategy in line with Family Practice Services Committee guidelines and Ministry of Health funding expectations.
  • Develop and implement a measurable communications strategy for member engagement.
  • Contribute to consistent brand application across the organization through the development and rollout of internal processes and templates
  • Produce internal and public-facing communication materials for BDFP and PCN activities, including but not limited to web materials, newsletter articles, brochures, displays, remarks, memos, social media content, reports, and presentations.
  • Curate and write content for the monthly BDFP member newsletter
  • Create engaging written and multimedia social media content and maintain an active presence for BDFP channels
  • Write press releases to promote BDFP and PCN activities to media
  • Design marketing materials (posters, ads, stickers, pamphlets) for both digital and print
  • Maintain video library of past events for public access
  • Support with event coordination, process design, communications, and audience management
  • Liaise with community and health partners to support communications for joint initiatives
  • Occasionally represent the BDPF and PCN at community events (e.g. Inter-Agency/ partner events, community fairs, etc.)
Special Projects:
  • Take leading role in redesign and development of the BDFP website
  • Create BDFP social media strategy and launch BDFP Instagram account
  • Work closely with BDFP Shared Care team to create and implement communications plans for Shared Care projects

Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a degree in a relevant discipline such as education in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, or a related field
  • 3 years' related experience in communications, community engagement, or public relations
  • Experience in a public sector or non-profit environment is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated experience developing brand stories, key messaging, and building communications and engagement strategies and plans
  • Experience with event planning, management, and related activities 
Competencies 
  • Ability to create and deliver communication plans and strategies
  • Strong business writing skills with the ability to write and edit communications for web, print, and social media
  • Ability to set priorities effectively and problem solve, including early identification of risks
  • Has a collaborative team style with strong interpersonal communication, relationship building, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines with high quality output
  • Ability to engage diverse stakeholders and partners
  • Knowledge of the BC health care system and experience working in a primary care setting or with physicians and/or allied health care providers is an asset
  • Cultural awareness and competency
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams), and Zoom is required
  • Knowledge of content management systems such as Wordpress and Drupal
  • Available to attend occasional early morning and evening meetings when needed 
 
Additional Information 
This role is hybrid and requires at least two days per week in either of the two Burnaby Primary Care Networks Allied Health Hubs in the Brentwood (4445 Lougheed Hwy) and Edmonds (7366 Edmonds St) neighbourhoods, with occasional team meetings at the BDFP office (4211 Kingsway). 
This is a full-time role and standard hours of work for this position will be 37.5 hours per week 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM. To participate in engagement events, the ideal candidate will be flexible to occasionally work outside of normal business hours such as early mornings, evenings and weekends as needed.  

Salary: $72,000 – $85,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
