Cultural Safety and Humility in Health Care: A Vancouver Island Perspective
By Catherine Gislason
This presentation focuses on the Indigenous peoples of Vancouver Island and the unique context in which they live today. It is not a Canadian history lesson, but rather an opportunity to learn more about who the Indigenous Nations are, the lands they call home, what is important to them, and how colonization has shaped their experiences. The session also explores how health care providers can practice cultural safety, cultural humility, and trauma-informed care when working with Indigenous patients and communities.
