Rural and Remote Division of Family Practice

Revelstoke

The community now known as Revelstoke is situated on the traditional territory of four nations.

Following the Columbia River, to the south, the Sinixt,

To the east, through the Selkirk Mountains, the K’tunaxa,

Following the Columbia River, to the north, the Secwepemc,

And to the west, through the Monashee Mountains, the Sylix.

The division acknowledges the use and inhabitation of this land, sacred to these four nations and respectfully honours their traditions and culture.

Settlers came to the Revelstoke area during the 1860’s for a short-lived gold rush, followed by significant railroad development activities. Nestled high in the Monashee Mountains, next to Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Park, the community of Revelstoke boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in BC.  Recreational activities here include backcountry hiking, ski touring, heli-skiing and river rafting.

The climate of Revelstoke is impacted by the deflection of warm moisture-laden air from the Pacific upwards by the Columbia Mountains. The cooling of this air mass brings significant precipitation, particularly during the winter months and the community is known for its snowy winters. The average summer temperature is 18 degrees Celsius, while the average winter temperature is -5 degrees.
