Dr. Shana Johnston, originally from the east coast, completed her medical degree at Memorial University of Newfoundland and her residency at Dalhousie University. In 1998, she came out to BC “for the summer” and never looked back.
She spent her first six years in practice working with the Rural Locum Program, doing family practice as well as caring for patients in the ER and the hospital. She then moved to Vancouver, where she spent the next six years doing mainly obstetrics at BC Women’s Hospital. She then decided to try something different and took a two-year contract in Yellowknife, where she did family practice, obstetrics, served as a hospitalist, and was the head of the GP Obstetrics group for the two years she was there. Finally, she and her husband, Dave, and their seven-year-old daughter, Maya, decided to settle in Victoria. After a year working with the hospitalist service at RJH, she found her way back to obstetrics and family practice and is happy to say she’s found her medical “home” at the new GROW Health clinic.
Her interests outside of medicine include her daily yoga, meditation practice, hanging out with her family, and being outside in nature whenever possible.
