Over the past two years, the Surrey North Delta Division of Family Practice has worked tirelessly on our large-scale work within the provincial A GP For Me initiative. The overall goal for this initiative is to work with physicians, community partners and patients to create an environment to help patients who want a family physician to have access to one. In addition, A GP for Me aims to help patients access other health care professionals and health care services. Some highlights of our work to-date include:
- Integrating Nurse Practitioners into primary health care in Surrey-North Delta to work with special populations including: The Aboriginal community, survivors of physical and domestic violence, and the South Asian community with complex chronic conditions.
- Recruiting 16 new family physicians into the community.
- Providing supports for family physicians who are retiring. This includes financial planning resources, social networking opportunities, and identifying new physicians to take over a retiring physician’s practice.
- Providing networking and educational opportunities for medical office assistants to build their collegiality, improve their efficiency and support the integral role that they play in a physician’s practice.
- A telephone and web-based patient portal for patients who are looking for a family physician, to find a physician in the community.
