Victoria Divisions of Family Practice

Dr Kathy Dabrus

I have been involved in full-service family practice in Victoria since 1989. I have a lot of history in our community. During this last year I earned my CCFP through the practice eligible route. The complete CV of my professional life prior to my involvement with the division is posted on the Victoria Division of Family Practice Website. It does include  being the past President of the local chapter of the Federation of Medical Women and a Clinical instructor in the UBC Island Medical program.

I am so excited about the potential for this initiative and positive impact that it can have on our entire community. I have been involved with the Division since the initial call out for volunteers took place in June of 2011. With the other members of the team I helped to draft our vision and our mission statements to set our direction. During my time on the board I have advocated for fair process, stewardship, and responsibility. I have worked at building real relationships with members and stakeholders through respect for all.

As a Board Member I have been the liaison with the Community building committee and their offshoot mentorship program. I have been the voice of your Division in the community with CFAX Radio, CBC Radio, and The Black Press News. My media training was invaluable in preparing me for these events.

During the last two years I have engaged in CME training to better prepare me for a leadership role within the Division. I have attended a CMA Professional Management Institute Module yearly. The first module was “Strategic Influence” and the second one was “Leading  Change and Innovation”. This year I have been attending the FPSC sponsored course through Simon Fraser University “Leadership and Professional Management Development." This course has five modules occurring every six weeks for a total of ten days. It is taught at the Beedie Business School with business school professors in Vancouver. I feel this work has given me the necessary skills to be an effective leader in our Division.

During this course work I have had to reflect on my strengths and use my courage to use the tools and techniques that I have been taught. I plan to use these skills to initiate and sustain positive change within our community.
