Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for Island Health Applications

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for Island Health Applications (e.g. PowerChart) is required as of May 4th. After that, you will need two steps to access applications: log in, then receive a notification or code on your cellphone and approve the log-in or enter that code. This will be required for PowerChart, EMR Connect, entering sessions, webmail, Citrix Workspace and anything accessed via "gateway.islandhealth.ca". Island Health has made this change to align to provincial security standards, and MFA is already the standard for other health authorities and for systems such as PharmaNet.

Although MFA is cumbersome, there are some benefits: you will not need to change your password as frequently, and it will be easier to reset an expired or forgotten password (you won't have to call the service desk).  Once MFA is adopted by most users, the password change frequency will increase to 90 days and the password reset function from your mobile phone will be turned on.

Community physicians are advised to set up their devices now so you aren’t forced to do it when it's very inconvenient.  For step-by-step instructions, see the MFA instructions for Mobile Phone  or watch the instructional video (requires log-in to VIHA). You can also call Island Health's service desk at 250-370-8777 for help and questions.
