LTC and Maternity Grants – Eligibility for Short-term Leaves

To be eligible for the LTC and Maternity grants, physicians must commit to maintaining service until December 31, 2023.

FPSC is now clarifying that physicians who have a temporary absence prior to December 31, 2023 (e.g., maternity leave) but otherwise meet the eligibility requirements of the Maternity Care Network Grant or the Long-Term Care Grant, are eligible to claim the grants.

Temporary absence is defined as: a continuous absence or non-continuous reduction in working days that is not expected to occur regularly. This would most commonly include absences related to illness, parental leave, caregiving or military deployment.

In order to claim the grants, the physician must make best efforts to arrange for another care provider to provide the same scope of practice and similar days/hours of service to their maternity or long-term care patients.

Physicians who take indefinite absences (e.g. retire or depart practice in BC) prior to December 31 are not eligible to claim the grant.
