Controlling What is Still Ours: Rebuilding Rational Culture in Medicine

You're invited to join us for a social evening of interactive discussion to hear from keynote speaker Dr. Jillian Horton.

Date: Thirsday, March 13, 2025

Time: 6:00pm - 8:30pm

Location: New Venue! The Wallace at 125 Victory Ship Way, North Vancouver, BC

Speaker: Dr. Jillian Horton

This interactive presentation explores how important parts of our medical culture have eroded physician well being and fulfillment. Dr. Horton will discuss how we can positively contribute towards rebuilding a sense of fulfilment in our profession by tending to our relationships with self, others and our shared medical culture.

Dr. Jillian Horton is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the Health Sciences Centre and the University of Manitoba. She directs the Alan Klass Health Humanities Program, is an Associate Chair in the Department of Medicine, and is a former Associate Dean of Undergraduate Student Affairs.

Dr. Horton has competed a longitudinal internship teaching Mindful Practice (at the University of Rochester) and Chief Wellness Officer training at Stanford University. Her writing about medicine and medical culture appears regularly in the LA Times, the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, Maclean's, and a variety of American news outlets by syndication. She is also a contributor to CBC "Ideas."

She is a sought-after speaker and thought leader on the subject of physician health, both nationally and internationally. Her award-winning first full-length book, We Are All Perfectly Fine: A Memoir of Love, Medicine and Healing was released by HarperCollins Canada in February 2021 to critical acclaim, and is a national bestseller. It is currently being adapted for television by a major network. She was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Wilfred Laurier University for her work translating the experience of health care workers for the public.

Complimentary dinner will be provided to all attendees, as well as opportunities to network with your colleagues and engage in group discussions. Free underground parking can be accessed from Victory Ship Way entrance. Please leave your license plate and parking stall number with the reception desk.

We may be taking photos and/or video during this event, and some of them may be published in print and/or electronically.

If you register but cannot attend, please notify Steve Orti, Events Coordinator, at sorti@nsdivision.ca by March 3, 2025 @ 1:00pm.

What Is Pickleball?

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in North America and here’s why!

  • Pickleball is ideal for all skill levels and ages
  • Pickleball is a very social activity
  • Playing pickleball is great exercise for your mind and body. Pickleball and racquet sports could extend your life!
  • Can play indoors and outdoors
  • Inexpensive and requires minimal equipment and gear
  • A lower impact sport
  • Easy to learn, challenging to master

How to play:

Pickleball is played on a badminton size court with the net lowered to the ground, similar to tennis. In doubles, 4 people play on a court at once. The paddles (not racquet) look like an oversized ping pong paddle. Because of it’s strategic nature, it is a sport that young and old, and all genders can play together.

Drop-ins are also welcome! Please contact Dr. Erin Hasinoff by cell: 778-773-4052 or e-mail: erin_hasinoff@yahoo.ca for any questions or last minute notifications.
