From 2013-16, the Victoria Division implemented a variety of community development initiatives designed to increase capacity in family practice and ensure greater access for patients. Some of this work, such as TORCH, is now sustained under other programs. Other work is continuing for an additional year to solidify and build its impact in our community, and determine sustainability plans.
Recruitment, Retention and Practice Coverage
The Victoria Division is working at the local, regional and provincial levels to increase the number of GPs available to provide patient care, and ensuring that practicing GPs can find coverage should they need or wish to take time off. The Division has taken a lead role in establishing a provincial Recruitment & Retention Steering Committee, and is working with the other nine divisions on Vancouver Island to build and implement a regional strategy for bringing more GPs to Island communities.
In Victoria, since beginning our work in this area, we have 18 new or returning family physicians in Victoria, and are able to fill the majority of locum postings. Help spread the news by sharing our orientation/welcome booklet and video.
The goal of this work is to support practices to take on new patients. So far, we have provided hands-on support to more than 25 per cent of the GPs in Victoria, and will continue to spread and respond to demand for assistance. Supports have included helping to improve patient flow, team building, implementing the Practice Toolkit, coaching, EMR assistance, engagement of Medical Office Assistants, and more.
