Health Insurance: In BC, public health insurance is called the Medical Services Plan – or MSP. It covers the cost of medically-necessary insured doctor services.

Social Insurance Number: The Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a nine-digit number that you need to work in Canada or to have access to government programs and benefits.

Medical Services Plan (MSP): In order to receive payment from MSP for insured services provided to eligible patients, physicians must first enrol with MSP to receive a billing number. After they have enrolled and received their billing number, physicians can submit claims to MSP for services listed in the MSC Payment Schedule and other payment schedules.

Diagnostic Code Descriptions (ICD-9): All claims submitted by physicians to the Medical Services Plan (MSP) must include a diagnostic code. This information allows MSP to verify claims and generate statistics about causes of illness and death.
