Director-at-Large: Courtney Defriend
Ti’yuqtunat (Courtney Defriend) was born and raised in Nanaimo. Her mother is a status Indian from Stz’uminus First Nation and her father originally comes from Scotland. Courtney is the Regional Manager for Vancouver Island in Mental Health and Wellness with First Nation’s Health Authority. Previously, she worked for 13 years at the Tillicum Lelum Aboriginal Friendship Centre as a front line worker in family services and finished her journey in a management role. Courtney also owned a business working with communities around spiritual and emotional healing through group and family workshops, education, and youth conferences. Courtney has worked with interdisciplinary teams, specifically on social issues such as child and youth mental health, addictions, and homelessness. Courtney practices with a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care and a Master of Arts in Leadership. She also holds a certificate in Family Mediation as she has much passion working with the child welfare system and the complexities within family systems. Finally, she has started a new journey with University of Toronto as an online sessional instructor teaching one course for the Indigenous Master of Social Work Program.
