Fernie is a historic mountain town founded in 1898.  Located in southeast British Columbia, it is completely surrounded by the Canadian Rocky Mountains.  Its storied past is founded on the coal mining industry but is now internationally known for its outdoor recreational opportunities.  ‘Come for the winter, stay for the summer’ is what many of our visitors have mused.

The recreational activities are limitless. Fernie Alpine Resort is located less than 10km from town. Nordic ski trails, snowmobiling, year-round mountain biking, hiking, golfing, and world renown fly fishing are all on our doorstep.

With its quintessential downtown, Fernie has something for everyone.  Locally owned and operated retail, excellent restaurants, and a vibrant arts & culture scene. You will never lack for something to do.

Fernie boasts a diverse economy with two primary sectors – natural resources and tourism.  It is estimated that 50% of Fernie’s population base is tied to the nearby coal mines in Sparwood and Elkford.  However, Fernie’s recreational amenities, wild spaces and historic small-town charm have created a strong tourism and recreation economy.

So please, look us up. Come for a visit. But be careful, you may never leave.

Medical Community:

Elk Valley Hospital (EVH) is a 20-bed Level 1 Community Hospital located in Fernie, BC and offers services including inpatient, obstetrics, and emergency servicing the 5000 Fernie residents and additional 10,000 Elk Valley and South Country residents. There is one operating room suite where surgical procedures include gynecology/OBS, C-Section, D & C, excision of ganglion, vasectomies, surface cancer excision, orthopedics, hernia repair and upper and lower GI scoping. Hours of operation are weekdays Monday to Friday with 24/7 on-call to support C-Section and Trauma coverage.

Fernie has three family clinics. All physicians are required to work in the Emergency Department and opportunities are available for providing obstetric care.
