Rural and Remote Division of Family Practice

Hazelton

The Hazeltons (Hazelton, New Hazelton and South Hazelton) are located 290 km east of Prince Rupert and 70 km northwest of Smithers. Situated on unceded Gitxsan Territory the Hazeltons and surrounded by 8 Gitxsan and Wit’suwet’in communities (Gitanyow, Gitwangak, Gitsegukla, Hagwilget, Witset, Gitanmaax, Sik-E-Dakh and Anspayaxw) are characterized by the Skeena, Kispiox, Kitwaga and Bulkley Rivers and the stunning Stegyawden Peak in the Roche De Boule Mountain Range. A rich cultural history lies here, and people are historically and presently tied to the land in many ways. Hazelton’s twelve physicians cover 7.5 FTEs and work in a group practice to offer full-service medical care, including Emergency, In-patient and Long Term Care services at Wrinch Memorial Hospital. Within Wrinch Medical Clinic, Hazelton physicians work closely with two Nurse Practitioners and 2 Registered Midwives to provide full-service family practice care. Maternity Care in Hazelton is midwifery-led and interprofessional. Hazelton physicians, nurse practitioners and midwives work together to serve the population of the Hazeltons and outlying villages, which is approximately 7,600 people. The catchment area spans from Kispiox Valley in the north to New Hazelton and Witset in the east and to Gitanyow in the northwest. Wrinch Memorial Hospital has ten complex care beds, one respite bed, ten acute care beds and one secure psychiatric observation room. Our hospital accommodates a privately-owned in-house pharmacy, dental clinic, outpatient clinic, laboratory, and medical imaging unit, which includes ultrasound.

Other health and community care services include public health efforts, home and community care support services, mental health and addictions, diabetic education, pre- and post-natal outreach programs, and Skeena Place Assisted Living. Visiting specialists provide a range of services, including podiatry, pediatrics, internal medicine, general surgery, rheumatology, OB/GYN, cardiology, and gerontology. First Nations Health Authority, in collaboration with local Health Stations, ensures that health promotion and health care services delivered to First Nations populations are culturally appropriate.

With the support and assistance of the Rural and Remote Division of Family Practice team, the Hazelton Chapter is looking forward to improving access to primary care services, establishing a local platform for all primary care partners, signing a Long-term Care MOU with the local health authority, and rising to the challenge of delivering quality care in a rural setting.
